This landscape is by Qi Baishi, one of modern China’s best known painters, who started out his career as a joiner in Xiangtan, Hunan. This masterwork was painted after the famous scenery of Guilin, one destination of Baishi’s travels before eventually settling in Beijing. Qi Baishi did few landscapes during his career and produced this kind of large-scale work only during a year or two span around 1922.
