This is one of two paintings of banana trees in the Suma Yakichirō collection. In the verse at the bottom right, Qi Baishi tells his life story from his beginnings as a carpenter through his career as an artist with a seemingly self-deprecating tone. His love for his art shines through despite the surface-level negativity.
