A lofty scholar strolls along a willow-lined embankment. The inscription likens it to the noble solitude of an illegitimate child. The sense of aloof dignity is echoed in the light colors and sparse composition. Suma purchased this work from the Beijing art gallery Rongbaozhai, and it became one of his favorites. He praised it as “a masterwork from [Baishi’s] prime” that “gives a sense of the ages and leaves a truly deep impression.”
