Banana Trees

Museum No.
AK1023
芭蕉図 為昇龍山人作 Image

Bold, sweeping brushstrokes render these giant leaves into bold, almost abstract forms. Qi Baishi’s early studio in his hometown of Xiangtan, Hunan, overlooked banana trees, so it was a familiar subject matter for the artist. In the inscription, Baishi dedicates this 1930 painting to Shenglong Shanren (“Rising Dragon Mountain Man,” J: Shōryū Sanjin), the sobriquet of collector Suma Yakichirō.
