This scenery evokes Baishi’s hometown of Xiangtan, in Hunan. In the poem at the upper right, he bemoans how cormorants gather to shrewdly catch the overflow from fishing nets. What then, he asks, is even the use of fishing? The birds here look very similar to the rocks. Perhaps he is making fun of the idealization of fishing as a gentlemanly activity among the Chinese literati.
