This work gives us the Four Treasures of the Scholar’s Studio: ink, inkstone, brush, and paper—the latter of which is represented by the paper it is painted on. Suma Yakichirō purchased this in Nanjing in 1935 and wrote this about it: “The fact that the brushes and inkstone sketched here are the same ones I used to see each time I went to visit the Old Man [Baishi] makes this especially fascinating to me.”
