These soaring magnolia trees covered in white blossoms have trunks done with single lines of ink—lighter brown in the back to give a sense of depth. The inscription explains that Baishi had never done two magnolia paintings in a day, but after a one he did for his friend “Old Man Ushijima” was taken by a third party, Baishi ended up having to paint a second version (this) that was even better than the first.
