In China, the crane symbolizes longevity as well as status; the crane is displayed on the rank badge of a civil official of the first rank. (It is also called “bird of the first rank.”) In contrast to its erudite image, this bird exudes an endearing sense of charm. Baishi painted it at age sixty-five, the same year he was invited by artist Lin Fengmian (1900–1991) to become an instructor at a Bejing arts school.
