Baishi did this painting filled with auspicious imagery as a gift for his beloved student Xuean Ruiguang (1878–1932). The Chinese pronunciation of the first character for “Buddha’s hand” (a kind of citrus fruit) is fu, which is a homonym of the word for “blessings” (fu). The first character in the Chinese word for “lychee” (li) is a pun on the words for “benefits” (li) or “clever” (li).
