The brilliant color of a lotus blossom stands out in this otherwise monochrome painting of a lotus-filled pond. Below the black leaves and speckled stems swim two surprisingly personable-looking fish. Baishi’s freewheeling sense of humor is suggested by the inscription, “North, south, east, west; you swim around at will.”
