Viewing Mountains with Friends

Museum No.

相伴看山図 Image

Suma Yakichirō first saw this painting in Beijing, at which time he recommended it to the German diplomat Oskar Trautmann (1877–1950). Later, in 1944, Suma came across it again at the shop of an art dealer in Berlin and acquired it, feeling a strong sense of fate and connection with the painting and the artist. The initial sketch for this painting also survives, giving us a sense of Qi Baishi’s artistic process.
