An eagle perched on a large old tree eyeballs his surroundings. The Chinese character for “eagle” is homophonous with the first character of “hero.” Paintings of eagles on trees or rocks were often made for boys, in hopes for their future growth and success. Baishi made many such works in his late years. His raptors represent bravery, but they also exude amicability and charm.
