Baishi inscribed this painting with a Chinese poem that expressed his joy at living the country life in his old age. In part of the poem, he praises the vegetable fields replete with blue-green foliage. The Chinese cabbage (bok choy) is popularly consumed across China. He depicts these heads in varied tones of dark and light ink, using dry and moist brushstrokes. Even the chops are stamped in blue seal ink.
