The second line of this painting’s inscribed poem reads, “In a thunderstorm, I wonder if you will turn into a dragon and depart.” Baishi poetically and visually likens the giant trunk and writhing branches of this pine tree to a mythological beast. In the tree, seemingly deep in conversation, sit two mynas—birds believed to understand human speech.
