Baishi sold this landscape—scenery from home province of Hunan—directly to the diplomat and collector Suma Yakichirō. He originally painted it on the request of a friend, the artist and politician Xia Shoutian (1870 –1935), and gave the painting to Shoutian. According to Suma, however, Baishi later realized how hard it was to recreate such a work and asked to have it back.
