This album comprises Qi Baishi’s interpretation of Ming–Qing transition painter and eccentric Bada Shanren (1626–1705). The sparrow in the album’s fourth leaf resembles those found in Shanren's work. Qi claims in the inscription, however, that while his sparrow may resemble Shanren's, his has the upper hand. The tradition of painting explicitly in the style of one’s artistic predecessors started with Dong Qichang (1555–1636) in the later Ming dynasty (1368–1661).
