This contains a visual pun drawing on the identical pronuncia¬tions of the Chinese words for “fish” (yu) and “leisure” (yu). “Three Leisures” (or fish, san’yu) usually means three times considered most suited to reading (in winter, at night, and in the rain), but Baishi created his own original interpretations of the three as being poetry, painting, and longevity.
