This painting, with trees and four houses flanking either side of a diagonal river, exemplifies the traditional landscape composition type “one river, two banks.” A banner marks one house as a pub. Both banks are done in simple strokes; nevertheless, the trees manage to express movement in the wind, while the houses are arranged creatively.
