A starling alights on a withered stalk above flowers bursting into bloom. The work is a study in contrasts, the bare branch’s brown against the flowers’ lush greens, and the bird looking down at a blossom craning up towards the sky. The seal reads “Person of Apricot Village,” referring to Qi Baishi’s hometown in Xiangtan County of Hunan Province.
