In the mid-Edo Period, artists in Kyoto, regardless of their schools, were trying to find the most effective use of gold and silver foils - Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) being no exception. In this painting, only two deer are depicted, and all the rest of the screen is coated with gold foil. The depictions were carried out in a realistic style which Okyo was skilled at. The decorative style in the tradition of Sotatsu and Korin with the use of accurate realism are well combined in this painting.
