Before Maruyama Ôkyo (1732-95), the founder of the Edo realist painting, established his painting style, he had studied Kanô school painting under Ishida Yûtei (1721-1786). This work bears the seal that was used when he used the artist name "Isshô." Not many works from this period remain.
