Maruyama Ôkyo (1722-95) led the Kyoto Gadan ("Kyoto painting circle") with Ike no Taiga (1723-76) and Yosa Buson (1716-83) in the late 18th century. Although this work basically follows Ôkyo's style of sketch techniques, it conveys the soft touch of yamatoe ("Japanese-style paintings"). Observing the well-planned composition of this pair of screens is one way to appreciate this work.
