A representative realist painter of the pre-modern era, Maruyama Ôkyo (1733-95) painted this work when he was relatively young. The signature and seals of the work suggest that it was produced when he was 31- or 32-years-old, and thus is a valuable work from his earlier days. Matsudaira Bin (1744-90), who added the inscription to the work, was a senior retainer of the Kameyama clan of Ôkyo's hometown.
