This is a reply to a letter from his sister, Otome. Ryôma notes, "Human beings live inside an oyster shell within the world-how amusing." He also touches on details concerning the chief retainer of Satsuma, Komatsu Tatewaki (1835-70) and the chief retainer of Tosa, Gotô Shôjirô (1838-97).
