Letter from Sakamoto Ryoma to his Sister Otome on the 4th Day of the 12th Month of Keio 2 (1866)

This letter-sent to his sister, Otome, in Tosa, on the fourth day of the twelfth month of 1866 (Keiô 2)-informs her of the year's events. It covers a multitude of subjects, including descriptions of the disaster at Teradaya, his honeymoon in Kagoshima, the war between the shogunate and Chôshû, and the statesman from Satsuma, Saigô Takamori (1828-77). The section containing Ryôma's illustrations of his ascent of Mount Kirishima is particularly famous. This is the best-known of Sakamoto Ryôma's letters.
