This letter dates to the period when Sakamoto Ryôma was engaged in naval exercises in Kobe. Its content includes his reactions to incidents of retaliatory attacks against foreign warships at Shimonoseki; to arguments in favor of the \"purification of Japan\"; and his teasing, admonitory response to his sister, Otome\'s, letter noting her wish to leave the world and enter holy orders. It also includes his concern over the suppression of the Tosa Loyalist Party.
