Eight-cusped mirrors with auspicious flowers and paired phoenixes were made in Japan during the late Heian period (794-1185), then taken to the Korean Peninsula and copied during the Koryo dynasty (918-1392). This mirror is of the latter type. An example of an eight-lobed mirror closely resembling the museum mirror, with a design of auspicious flowers and paired phoenixes, was excavated in Gunma Prefecture. Many examples of exactly the same form and design are known in Korea.
