A boat sails across the sea, while dragons and fish peek out between the waves. This motif also occurs in round mirrors, and there are a number of variations on the theme, depending on the style and the absence or presence of characters meaning, "big, bright, shining sun." This style of mirror is widely found in Korea and Japan, as well as the northern half of China, and many examples similar to the museum's mirror have been found on the Korean Peninsula. In Japan, perhaps because of the sea-related motif, mirrors of this type have been donated to shrines dedicated to the god of navigation, such as Oogido Shrine on the island of Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, and Isozaki Shrine on the shores of Lake Biwa.
