Dong Qichang (1555-1636), whose sobriquets included Xuanzai, Sibai, and Xiangguang, was a native of Huanting in the province of Songjiang (present-day Songjiang in the city of Shanghai), China. He excelled in calligraphy and painting and was acclaimed as a first-class man of letters at the end of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Dong Qichang emphasized the importance of writing calligraphy from one's heart, disregarding intentional and clever styles. His own calligraphy, however, renders a slightly too elegant atmosphere.
