Dong Qichang (1555-1636), one of the most celebrated Chinese calligraphers, painters, and art critics of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), was born in Huating, Jiangsu Province. His sobriquet (Ch., zi) was Xuanzai, and his pseudonyms (Ch., hao) were Sibai, Xiangguang, and Siwen. In Wanli 17 (1589), he passed the civil service examination and became a high government official, though he later resigned due to the political corruption and despotism of the eunuchs. He also authored the painting commentary Huanchanshi suibi (Essays from the Painting and Chan (Zen) Studio) and Rongtai wenji (Collection of Writings). His connoisseurship in the arts greatly influenced later generations.
