Ganku (1756-1838), the founder of the Kishi school, was born in Kanazawa and established a style of painting that rivaled the Maruyama and Shijô schools of Kyoto. Shirai Kayô, author of Gajô yôryaku (The Essence of Painting), a treatise on art criticism, was among his pupil. Though famous for his paintings of fierce tigers, here, Ganku used his characteristic rough brushstrokes to create a powerful and unforgettable scene of Arashiyama in Kyoto.
