After the death of the great Maruyama Ôkyô (1733-95), Ganku (1749-1739) played a prominent role in teaching Japanese painting in the Kyoto art scene, along with Ôkyô's former pupil, Keibun (1779-1843). Many of Ganku's later works are rather rough, though this painting of Girls' Day dolls (hina) was executed in relatively careful, detailed brushstrokes unlike what comes to be known as his signature style.
