Ganku (1756-1838) came to Kyoto from Kanazawa. While sketching, Ganku gradually developed his own painting style, establishing a leading school in Kyoto next to the Shijô school. Although this is a small-scale work that depicts Canopus, a symbol of longevity, Ganku's unique and sharp brushstrokes in the drawing of lines are pleasantly restrained.
