Ganku (1749-1839) was born in Kanazawa in the province of Kaga (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture). He came to Kyoto to study the painting style of Shen Nanping, and later established the Kishi school that was rivaled by the Maruyama and Shijô schools. Since Ganku was an extremely ambitious person, people often disliked him. Although the brushstrokes in works during his later years are rather rough and careless, this hanging scroll, with the composed use of brushstrokes and colors, clearly demonstrates his talents.
