Jiang Chenying (1628-99) was born in the town of Cixi, Zhejiang Province. He is also known by his sobriquet, Ximing, and his style names, Zhanyuan and Weijian. Known as an outstanding calligrapher of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), he was described as "the best at [writing] small standard script (Ch., kai-shu; J., kaisho)." This scroll, written in the semi-cursive script (Ch., xing-shu; J., gyôsho), contains his poem in eight stanzas of seven characters each, celebrating the long life of a certain Du Weiweng.
