This mechanical doll represents a scene from the Noh play Tsuchigumo (The Monster Spider), in which the warrior Minamoto no Raikō vanquishes an enormous spider. When the spring mechanism (zenmai) inside was wound up, a spider would come down next to the pine tree behind Raikō.
