A jinbaori is a man’s military surcoat worn over armor. This example is decorated with lions and peonies, which are associated with the celebratory Noh Play Shakkyō (Stone Bridge). Since medieval times, lions and peonies have appeared on Japanese armor, exemplifying the warrior class’s fondness for literary motifs.
