Arabesques and stylized flowers (J., hôsôge) decorate a characteristically Chinese-style eight-cusped mirror. Ordinarily, there would be six or eight such flowers, but perhaps because this mirror is especially small, there are only five. Each petal consists of opposing tendrils that form a sacred jewel (J., hôshu) shape, a motif based on Sui (581-618) dynasty prototypes. From the 6th to the 8th centuries, this design appears not only in the applied arts of China, but more widely, of Korea and Japan.
