Eight-lobed mirrors made their appearance after the beginning of the Tang (618-907) dynasty. Various figurative motifs are depicted, widely spaced, within the field of the mirror back. The main design on this mirror, consisting of a person on horseback, carrying a spear and pursuing animals such as goats and wild boars, is occasionally seen on round mirrors as well. This motif also appears on objects of gold and silver from the same period and first came to life in objects made by nomadic horse-riders of distant Persia and Central Asia, blossoming in designs of Chinese bronze mirrors.
