Toiletry Case with Pines and Camellias in Makie (Sacred Treasure from Asuka Shrine)

Museum No.
IK68-19

The whole piece is decorated in Nahiji lacquer with a design of pine and camellia. The design is arranged on both sides of the lid and on four sides of the body in gold Maki'e, cut gold leaf, and mother-of-pearl inlay. The design spreads over the two hanging boxes within this box. The gold and silver fittings also have a camellia tree design.
A mirror, a silver casket, silver cosmetics cases, silver eyebrow brushes, silver scissors and tweezers, and silver dishes are kipt in this box; every item has pine and camellia design in gilt intaglio. This box is one of the treasures preserved in Asuka Shrine. It is very reminiscent of a hand box with a design of symbolized willow, paulownia, tachibana orange, and peonies, which is preserved in Kumanohayatama Shrine.
