Imperial Robe Box with Pine Branches and Cranes in Makie (Sacred Treasure from Asuka Shrine)

Museum No.
IK68-17

This imperial robe box is from among the sacred treasures preserved at Asuka Shrine, which used to be an associate shrine of the Kumano Hayatama Shrine in Wakayama Prefecture. According to ancient records, it was given as an offering to the shrine in 1390 (Meitoku 1). The square shape with cropped corners and the slightly raised surface of the box are extraordinary, and the design wherein pine branches and flying cranes are depicted in silver hiramakie ("flat makie") on a black lacquered background is considered very auspicious. This box was used for housing a crown, which is also preserved at the shrine.
