There are many depictions of Hotei found in the first half of the 17th century, and there is another one by Tenkaichi ("First under Heaven") Izumo-no-kami with exactly the same depiction (in the possession of Osaka Municipal Museum) as seen here. The big nose and ears which Hotei has are also found in hand mirrors and folding screens from the same period decorated with figures of Europeans. This was one of the characteristics of human depictions in the design of those days.
