Tani Bunchô (1749-1820) established a new painting style after having studied the techniques of Kanô school, Tosa school, southern style, and Western-style paintings. He reigned supreme in painting circles of the late Edo period (1615-1868). The inscription on this scroll was written by the head of the Shôheikô Academy, Ichikawa Kansai (1749-1820) in 1819 (Bunsei 2), when he was 71 years old.
