Kôno Bairei (1844-1895) studied the sketch-like styles of the Maruyama and Shijô schools respectively with Nakajima Raishô (1796-1871) and Shiokawa Bunrin (1808-1877). Later, he taught at the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting. His students include Takeuchi Seihô and Kawai Gyokudô. This painting incorporates a soft touch representative of the Shijô style, while at the same time, embodies a modern sensibility.
