Kôno Bairei (1844-95) studied Shijô school-style painting under Nakajima Raishô (1796-1871). After many years of training, he established his own school, which trained talented artists including Takeuchi Seihô (1864-1942), Kikuchi Hôbun (1862-1918), and Kawai Gyokudô (1873-1957). Bairei made this southern-style painting when he was 36 years old.
