Matsumura Gekkei (1752-1811) lost his beloved wife in an accident in the third month of 1781 (Tenmei 1). In autumn of the same year, he moved to Settsu Ikeda in Osaka, leaving Kyoto and his memories behind. In the following year, in order to start anew, he changed his name to Goshun. This work was probably produced shortly after this event.
