This painting is by Matsumura Goshun, also known as Gekkei (1752-1811). Goshun first studied painting with Ônishi Suigetsu (n.d.), then poetry and painting with the literati painter and haiku master Yosa Buson (1716-84). Under Buson's influence he adopted the style of the southern school of Chinese painting and also painted haiga or "haiku sketches." After Buson's death, he grew closer in style to Maruyama Ôkyo (1733-95), a painter of the realistic school who dominated contemporary art circles in Kyoto. By perfecting a realistic style of his own, as seen in this fusuma (sliding door) painting, Goshun became founder of the Shijô school of painting, which was equal in influence to the Maruyama school.
