The poet-painter Yosa Buson (b. 1716) died at dawn on the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month of Tenmei 3 (1784). Goshun (1752-1811), one of his favorite disciples, who studied haikai poetry and painting under Buson, was by his side on his deathbed. Goshun painted this portrait of Buson either immediately before or after his death. From his sunken cheeks, Buson appears emaciated from illness.
