Nin'ami Dôhachi (1783-1855) was a disciple of Okuda Eisen (1753-1811) and a well-known Kyôyaki potter at the end of the Edo period (1615-1868). The polychrome design of cherry blossoms and maple leaves allude to a poem, which can be rendered, "The cherry blossoms of Mount Yoshino look like clouds, while the maple leaves of the Tatsuta River resemble brocade." Hence, this motif style, which was a specialty of Dôhachi, is called the "cloud brocade" (J., kumo nishiki).
