Zhang Zhao (1691-1745, also known by the sobriquet, Detian, was born in the county of Huating (Jiangsu Province). In 1709 (Kangxi 48), he passed the official bureaucratic examination. Favored by the emperors Yongzheng (1678-1735, r. 1723-35) and Qianlong (1711-99, r. 1735-95), along with scholar-official Liu Yong (1719-1804), he was influential as an early Qing (1644-1911) authority in the study of the documentary script (Ch., tiexue), used to transcribe the Chinese classics.
